 Correlational Method – Psychology

Correlation means affiliation or association, more specifically it is a measurement of the degree to which two variables are related. A correlation study has three possible results: positive, negative, and no correlation. Here I will briefly elaborate on two of them.

Positive Correlation

A positive correlation is an interaction between two variables moving side by side in the same direction. It means if one variable increases as the other variable increases, or one variable decreases, the other decreases. Like, height and weight will be an example of a positive correlation. Because a taller person appears to be heavier. Some other examples are given below:

Examples

v When a person runs more and more, his or her rate of burning calories also rises. So, there is a positive relationship because both variables are increasing side by side, as the running state heats our body.

v Boys usually play aggressive and violent video games and possess furious and wild behaviour; these types of games rise the angriness in boys. So, a positive correlation between variables means with the increase of one variable will cause a rise in another variable also.

v People with an abundant amount of money generally may be happier because they can have many opportunities as compared to others. Thus, it is a positive correlation among variables as a rising in the amount of money also causes more happiness.

v Someone who can utilize more of his or her IQ will be more successful and will tremendously affect his or her income. So, it is also a positive correlation that increasing in one variable also became a cause of to rising in another variable.

v People using coffee to drink while working can be more active and remain alert compared to others. Therefore, it is also a positive correlation between both variables, one increases other also increases.

Negative Correlation

A negative correlation is a relationship between two variables that correlates an increase in one variable with a decline in the other. For instance, height and temperature above sea level. When you ascend the mountain usually height increases it gets colder means the temperature decreases. Some other examples are as under:

Examples

Ø People having healthy food have less chance to get ill, as by excessive use of good and healthy food we may reduce illness of the body. Thus, there is a negative relationship among variables.

Ø If government reduce the price of mobile phones, the number of selling phones will increase. So, it is a negative correlation because one variable is decreasing and the other is rising.

Ø Alcohol addiction fertility causes to destabilizes the health of people so an increase in the usage of alcohol can a cause to reduce the health condition. Therefore, it is a negative correlation as it’s an inverse relationship among variables.

Ø If the value of the dollar increases on an international level at the same time value of the Pakistani currency decreases it is also a negative correlation between both variables.

Ø A person who has fewer misdeeds possesses more respect from other people. Thus, it is also one of the negative correlations.
